Ogden Board of Education Names Derek Carlson
Next 6-12 Principal

February 12, 2024

OGDEN, IA — The Ogden Community School District Board of Education has named Derek Carlson as the district’s next 6-12 principal.

As high school principal in the Lyons Unified School District in Kansas, Carlson has overseen evaluation of certified and classified staff, created and facilitated several district-wide and building initiatives, and acted as the district-level ESL Coordinator.

Carlson was named the 2021 Kansas Principals Association Area II Middle Level Principal of the Year. He holds a master’s degree in educational administration from Emporia State University. Prior to his current position, Carlson served as assistant high school principal in Lyons.

“My family and I are thrilled to join the Ogden Schools community,” said Carlson. ”I want to introduce you to my wife, Andrea, and my two sons. Patrick is in 5th grade, and Cooper is in 2nd grade. After spending time in Ogden, meeting with staff, students, and parents, we've been warmly welcomed and have quickly grown fond of this vibrant community. As I step into the role of 6-12 principal, I am committed to fostering an environment of excellence, collaboration, and growth. Together, we will celebrate the achievements and milestones of Ogden Community Schools. Go Bulldogs!"

Board members worked with Grundmeyer Leader Services to conduct the search. Carlson interviewed with interview groups consisting of students, parents, teachers, and community members on February 9, 2024.

Carlson will officially begin leading Ogden Middle School and Ogden High School effective July 1, 2024.
